A couple weeks ago Abe had a couple of weekdays off. We decided to go into Louisville to go Christmas shopping and to find our first Christmas tree. Christmas shopping was fun. We basically went around trying to "hint" to each other the things we wanted for Christmas. We even decided at one point to split so we could look around by ourselves to see if we could find ideas for each other. We ended up running into each other and decided we would just stay together the rest of the time. We both came out with a few ideas what to get each other.
After five hours of shopping we were ready to go home, but still needed to stop at Wal-Mart to get our Christmas tree. Originally, we were talking about getting a little four foot tree that was only twenty dollars that I had seen on a previous shopping trip. As we were looking around we saw some pre-lit trees that were six footers, and then we wouldn't have to worry about buying additional lights. I thought that was a good idea. Then we saw a six and a half foot tree that was forty dollars and was really full and pretty, but wasn't pre-lit. I told Abe, "I'd still be happy with just the little four foot tree.. even though this one is pretty." We decided on getting the forty dollar tree that was big and pretty. We had to buy a lot of lights, ornaments, and all the other accessories our tree would need. When we checked out we were amazed at how everything added up. Within a couple days Abe had told some people that I was the one who wanted an expensive tree, which wasn't true at all. I had to make it clear to Abe that he wanted it just as much as I did so he would stop telling people that.. and then he finally agreed. Abe gets excited for Christmas too! We are happy with our first Christmas tree, and we are so excited to spend our first Christmas together with our family in Washington.
Your tree is so pretty. I love your new blog look, too.
ReplyDeleteTen days! I can't wait to see you.
Your tree looks awesome! It's amazing how fast it adds up, huh? The last two years Greg and I have tried to put the tree against a wall so we only have to decorate one side of it...it's a lot cheaper! Ha! Ha! I love your stockings, too! Super cute!
ReplyDeleteYour house looks so fun and cozy. I'm glad you got it all. Now next year, you already have memories made to go.
ReplyDeleteOh Grace,
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it when you write. You write the details. You tell us about all the little things like you guys splitting up to get gifts, then finally just staying together, and you tell us about Abe trying to pull a fast one and say the big tree was ALL your idea. Thank you for doing this. Thank you for including us in your life. I love the tree and stockings. This is one thing that I love about yours and Abe's personalities... you make the most of everything. I would have been tempted to not get a tree saying, "We won't be here on Christmas day and we will have to move it." But, because of you, Ray and I decided to get a tree and enjoy it for the week we'll have it. I love you. Thanks for writing.

That's so cute, maybe next year we will follow your example! Haha we have a little 10 inch tree that is sitting on our counter. But that's better than last year we didn't plan anything. But I'll tell you, I'm SO EXCITED for next year because Elijah will be able to understand the whole Christmas thing and we are going to go full out! Tree, lights, stockings, everything! Hope you two have a very Merry CHRISTMAS!!
ReplyDeleteGrace-- Good job! Might as well bite the bullet now and get a big tree as opposed to getting three or four in succession with each a little larger than the last.... Have a merry Christmas in Washington.
ReplyDeleteThis is so neat that you blogged your first tree and memories of shopping for each other for your first Christmas. My memories are a bit faded. But I remember crying to my mom that we couldn't afford a tree and then her buying a little 2 foot tree from the D.I. (LDS thrift store in Utah) for me and a handful of decorations. I had images in my head of kneeling down in front of a large tree kissing my new husband just like the old picture I have of my parents on their first Christmas.
ReplyDeleteMy sister found a 6 foot tree from the craft store for like $20. And we used all the rest of the money we had to buy lights for it. There was maybe a handful of decorations on it. And that massive tree took up half of our apartment's living room. We didn't know how to string lights to alternate. So when it flashed, the whole room would go dark. But I did get to kneel down in front of the tree and kiss my new husband.
Totally random, I know. But I know your mother-in-law. ;)
